Five new national records set at Goldenstates

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 27.11.2024) :: The Burson Auto Parts 50th annual Goldenstates at the Perth Motorplex at the weekend featured plenty of exciting racing for the ANDRA Regional Sportsman Championship, and its fair share of record-breaking performances as well.

Five new national ANDRA records were set at the November 22-23 event, as follows:-

- Connor McClure – new AA/APIA – Altered Production, Competition Eliminator ET record – 6.343 seconds (was 6.450)
- Connor McClure – new AA/APIA – Altered Production, Competition Eliminator speed record – 217.87mph (was 215mph)
- Rick Johns – new B/AA – Altered, Competition Eliminator ET record – 7.204 seconds (was 7.216)
- Rick Johns – new B/AA – Altered, Competition Eliminator speed record – 185.08mph (was 184.65mph)
- Robert Gaikhorst – new C/G – Gas, Super Stock Eliminator speed record – 168.19mph (was 166.66mph)

For Johns, his two new records came on his way to claiming the runner-up trophy for the prestigious event.

“To set the records is a wonderful thing for us, real dream come true stuff – after many years of trying, we have got the knowledge together to get there, and it is pretty wonderful,” Johns said.

“It worked out right, and we had a pretty good run in the event as well, with good equipment and a good crew behind us.

“When it comes to the racing, it is always a really tough field in Competition Eliminator, so you have to have it all in place to go well and we were so pleased with how it went, and we had a bit of luck go our way as well.

“Unfortunately, we had to step it in the final as it was going to the wall, so I had to step it for three tenths of a second and straighten it up, but it still went well enough to back up the record with that run so it was obviously quick! It would have been quicker though without that.

“Hats off to Jon (Jon Ferguson, winner) and his family, they have a really good deal together and he had to drive the wheels off it to get there as well.

“It was a great weekend, the facility and the people at the Perth Motorplex are just fantastic and I always say we are so lucky to live in the West with such passionate people over here.

“Thank you to all the track staff, and also to Jenkins Performance Products who built our chassis, Danny Selva at Competition Engines for building our engine, Peter Versma, and Dimoff Transmissions for their work on the transmission.

“Thank you also to my great crew – Josh, Justin and Budge – and to my wife and crew chief Liz Johns, and our family.”
