UN urges reopening of girls’ schools as new academic year begins

"VAN" (International Desk - 21.03.2024) :: As the new academic year begins, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is calling on the Taliban to allow girls to attend schools and universities.

UNAMA has deemed the ban on girls’ education “unjustifiable and harmful.”

The organization wrote on its official social media platform X on Wednesday, March 20: “It has been over 900 days since girls over the age of 12 have been prohibited from attending schools and universities.”

Emphasizing the necessity of education for all citizens, UNAMA stated that the Taliban should end the educational restrictions for girls.

The new academic year began today, Wednesday, March 20, without the presence of girls beyond sixth grade.

This is the third academic year in which girls above the sixth grade cannot attend school.

UNAMA, along with other human rights organizations and countries worldwide, has repeatedly called for the reopening of schools and universities to Afghan girls. Still, despite these requests, the Taliban has not taken any steps to allow girls to return to schools and universities.
