"VAN" (International Desk - 29.05.2025) :: The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria, Geir Pedersen, affirmed that “the United Nations will continue to support state institutions in Syria to achieve a successful political transition.”
“I held a fruitful meeting in Damascus with the Minister of Justice, Mr. Mazhar al-Wais, as we discussed the importance of judicial reform in Syria. The Minister briefed me on the efforts undertaken in this area, highlighted the existing challenges, and emphasized the need for support from the UN and international organizations.” Pederson tweeted.
Following his meeting with Interior Minister Anas Khattab, Pedersen tweeted: “I had a constructive meeting with Minister Khattab, during which we discussed security sector reform and the recent organizational restructuring within the ministry.”
He noted that Minister Khattab offered insights into the current challenges facing Syria and the ministry’s efforts to boost a stable security environment across the country.
“Safety and security are essential pillars for ensuring a comprehensive and smooth political transition in Syria.” Pederson added.
Pederson also described his meeting with Education Minister Dr. Mohammed Abdul Rahman Turko as “constructive and fruitful.”
“Constructive and fruitful meeting with Education Minister Dr. Mohammed Abdul Rahman Turko, who briefed us on the multiple challenges facing the education sector in Syria, the ministry’s strategic plans for moving forward, and the need for support.” He tweeted.
He stressed the need for continued strong international support for Syria, including from the UN system.
“Syrian youth deserve access to high-quality education and the opportunity to contribute to building a better future.” Pederson added.
