Italy Shines as Spain Steals the Show in Markham at the World Artistic Artistic Swimming World Cup 2025

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 05.05.2025) :: The World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup 2025 in Markham, Canada delivered three captivating days of competition, culminating in a standout victory for Italy in the Acrobatic Team final that denied Spain a clean sweep of golds on the final day. Italy’s dramatic Chicago-inspired routine, which marked a major improvement since their last outing, earned them the top step of the podium with a commanding margin. Spain’s silver was nonetheless historic, as it featured Dennis Gonzalez becoming the first male flyer in a World Cup medal-winning lift.

Throughout the competition, Spain showcased remarkable consistency and depth, topping the podium in multiple events including the Mixed Duet Free—where Gonzalez paired with Iris Tio Casas—and the Women’s Duet Free with Tio Casas and Lilou Lluis Valette. Spain also secured gold in the Team Technical and Team Free routines, confirming their strength across all disciplines and further solidifying Gonzalez’s reputation as a trailblazer in the sport.

Other highlights included the emotional return of Austria’s Eirini-Marina and Anna-Maria Alexandri, who defended their Women’s Duet Technical title in their first appearance since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and strong performances from China and France across multiple events. Markham once again proved a fitting stage for artistic swimming’s elite, with passionate fans and inspired routines setting the tone for the season ahead.
