Lea Boy & Oliver Klemet use 1500m speed to win inaugural 3km Knockout Sprints at Open Water Swimming World Cup

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 29.04.2025) :: Germany, Italy and Spain delivered standout performances at the second stop of the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup 2025 in Ibiza, with four thrilling races showcasing the sport’s growing depth and new competitive formats. Spain’s Angela Martinez Guillen delighted the home crowd with a determined victory in the women’s 10km. The Spaniard used a well-timed final sprint to claim her first World Cup gold medal – and the first ever for her country in open water racing.

Germany’s Oliver Klemet and Lea Boy then topped the podiums in the debut of the 3km knockout sprint events, which challenged athletes’ endurance, tactics, and speed across three intense rounds. Klemet and Boy expertly leverage their pool racing backgrounds to triumph over stacked fields. The World Cup’s newest event offered fast-paced drama and tactical intrigue, providing a glimpse of the excitement to come when the knockout format features at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this July.

In the men’s 10km race, Team Italy continued to show their consistent excellence at the top level, with Andrea Filadelli pulling the upset in Ibiza with an Italian podium sweep completed with Dario Verani's silver and Giuseppe Ilario's bronze.
