Rising Stars, Relentless Competition - Trakai is ready to host the 2025 World Rowing Under 19 Championships

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 30.07.2025) :: The 2025 World Rowing Under 19 Championships are coming up in eight days, taking place in Trakai, Lithuania, from 6 to 10 August. A total of 594 athletes from 47 nations will try to reach the podium across the twelve boat classes.

Germany and Italy are sending the largest teams, both with entries all boat classes offered. Host nation Lithuania is also boating a big team with entries in 10 boat classes, while Under 19 athletes from Uganda, Dominican Republic or Kuwait will be competing for the first time on the International stage.

The largest field entered is the women’s single sculls with crews from 27 countries racing. The name to watch is definitely Varvara Lykomitrou of Greece, the reigning World Under 19 Champion in the double sculls, fresh off an impressive Under 23 title in Poznan a few days ago. Who can challenge her? Maybe Esther Fuerte Chacon of Spain, who won a bronze medal last year in St Catharines in the double sculls.

The men’s single sculls has 26 entries and the battle between two medallists from last year, Mads Schmied of Germany and Tomas Kala of Czechia, will be interesting to follow. The medallists from the European Under 19 Championships will also be competing, so expect Austria and Hungary to be in the mix for the podium places.

The men’s double sculls will be hotly contested, with three World Champions from last year aiming to assert dominance in this boat class. Greece’s Konstantinos Giannoulis will attempt to defend his title, but powerful new combinations from Germany and Italy pose a serious threat, setting the stage for some intense and fast-paced racing.

The blue ribband event, the eight, features nine entries on the men's side, with fireworks expected as Great Britain, the USA, Romania, and New Zealand go head-to-head in one of the most fiercely competitive races of the regatta. The women’s eight sees six entries, with multiple athletes from last year returning to the biggest stage.

Racing will be held at Trakai’s International regatta venue, on Lake Galve, which has previously hosted the World Rowing Under 19 Championships three times: in 2002, 2013 and 2017. Trakai also played host to the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships and welcomes every year the Amber Oars International regatta.

Live race tracker, live video streaming, results, race reports, photo gallery and live blog will be available throughout the regatta on www.worldrowing.com, as well as updates on Instagram, Facebook and X. Live video streaming will be available on worldrowing.com for all five days of racing.

For rowers to be eligible to  compete at the World Rowing Under 19 Championships, they  must be 18 years of age or under. A rower can compete as a Under 19 rower until 31 December of the year in which he or she reaches the age of 18; after that date the rower advances to the Under 23 category.
