"VAN" (Sports Desk - 30.08.2026) :: The 2026/2027 ANDRA Regional Sportsman Series opened today at the Alice Springs Toyota Desert Nationals at Alice Springs Inland Dragway (ASID), with round two to swiftly follow on Sunday August 30.
The first half of the ‘Desert Double’ double-header launched the new season for Goodyear Racing Super Street, Nitro Voodoo Modified Bike, Nitro Voodoo Junior Drag Bike, and Junior Dragster.
When all was said and done, Shaun Boyer (Goodyear Racing Super Street), Dazz Scott (Nitro Voodoo Modified Bike), Bailey Paul (Nitro Voodoo Junior Drag Bike) and Zayne Condello (Junior Dragster) lifted the event-winning ANDRA Christmas Trees, taking the wins from runners-up Michael Jennings, Derryn McGregor, Cooper Plummer, and James Barlow.
Also recognised at the end of event presentations were the Alice Springs Toyota Desert Nationals round one top qualifiers, with Bailey Paul (Modified Bike) and Dean Jamieson (Modified Bike) each recognised with Top Qualifier medallions presented by Nitro Voodoo, while Ava Walker (Junior Dragster) and Jorja Stefanopoulos (Super Street) were recognised for their top qualifying efforts by New Gen Business Park.
For Goodyear Racing Super Street competitor Shaun Boyer, it was a great day which saw the Northern Territorian repeat his past success of taking wins at the opening round of the ANDRA series.
“It has been a great day; the car has been going really well. There were a few little issues, but we fixed it and it was a great day,” Boyer said.
“I am speechless to get the win; I really can’t believe it. There are a lot of hard racers here, and I was saying to myself this is going to be hard, but it was really, really good. I am overwhelmed really; really chuffed.
“I won round one last year in Darwin, and this is my first win at Alice Springs. We are really happy with it. Everyone here has been awesome, the track was good to us, and we are happy.
“We are looking forward to tomorrow – hopefully we can get another win! We will see what happens.
“Thank you to my step dad for towing the car down and helping me out, my two boys and the crew for helping me, ANDRA, all the track crew who are here busting their arses, and everyone involved. Thank you also to my sponsors, Noonmah Tavern, and Traffic Werx NT.”
Boyer claimed the victory over runner-up Michael Jennings, after having earlier emerged victorious from Mark Rossow (round one) and Andrew Waight (round two). Jennings meanwhile got the better of New Gen Business Park Top Qualifier Jorja Stefanopoulos in round one and Michael Bridges in round two before the final battle against Boyer.
In Nitro Voodoo Modified Bike, winner Dazz Scott went all the way over runner-up Derryn McGregor to hoist the winning ANDRA Christmas Tree high in the air. Scott set to work in round one with a victory over Greg Oberti before going on to take a win from Nitro Voodoo Top Qualifier and defending champ Dean Jamieson in round two, paving the way for the finals matchup with McGregor. McGregor began the day with a round one win over Tyson Gaghan, before sending Jason Rattray away wanting in round two.
“I am really excited because I honestly didn’t expect it. I do this on a beer budget because I love the atmosphere and the people and the riding. I am a little bit overwhelmed, this is not something I planned on or thought was going to happen,” grinned Scott.
“Everything went better than planned, obviously! I come and race for the grin, not the win, so to get a win is a bonus.
“I am certainly looking forward to tomorrow, and after today I am looking forward to the rest of the season!” he said, while thanking Combined Demolition, Maxi Equipment Hire, Kiwi Rossiter, and Susie Cameron for their support.
In Junior Dragster, Zayne Condello got the new season off to a strong start with the win over runner-up James Barlow after four rounds of racing. Condello didn’t put a foot wrong all day, defeating Karl Schulz (round one) and Decklan McGregor (round two) before he got the better of New Gen Business Park Top Qualifier Ava Walker in the semi-final. Barlow meanwhile had successfully faced off against Lachlan McGregor (round one), Izzy Woolcock (round two), and Luca Lamattina (round three) to book his ticket to the final match-up.
In Nitro Voodoo Junior Drag, Bike Bailey Paul and Cooper Plummer lined up for the bracket’s final showdown of the day, with Paul ultimately claiming the chocolates over runner-up Plummer. With the Nitro Voodoo Top Qualifier Medallion already secured, Paul enjoyed a bye in round one before dispatching Aliza Harris in round two to meet defending champ Plummer in the final. Plummer meanwhile raced through the first two rounds, first defeating Lawrence Raschella in round one, and then Kobe Ashelford in round two.
The non-championship Street Car bracket was also on track today, with Top Qualifier Michael Jury turning on the win light over runner-up Katrina Read, walking away with a perfect scorecard across all rounds of racing. Running a Chicago Shoot Out format this weekend, Jury and Read first faced off in round one, before Jury got the better of Brodie Harris in round two and Walter Naylor in round three before meeting Read again in the final. Jury was the only racer to get the upper hand on Read today, with the runner-up taking wins over Naylor in round two and Harris in round three.
ANDRA championship brackets Top Sportsman, Gallagher Modified, South Australian Drag Racers Association Super Sedan, and Nitro Voodoo Competition Bike were also scheduled to compete today, however when it became apparent during qualifying that the track conditions were not suitable for these high powered vehicles – and without the time to safely rectify the surface within today’s schedule – the decision was made that these brackets would take no further part in Saturday’s racing. Track works will be completed overnight, and ANDRA is hopeful that all scheduled brackets will be able to run in Sunday’s round two. Please note, points from today’s running will not count towards the John Storm Memorial.
