"VAN" (Sports Desk - 01.09.2026) :: Georgian National Basketball Team has one of the best, if not the best captains on the international level. The proof was his play against a strong Montenegro team in the FIBA World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers.
Tornike Shengelia, as always delivered in a big way.
Georgia performed great and dismantled the opponent 101:74. Georgia was just a better team and had the best player on the court, Toko. After a tight first half, the hosts delivered big in the last quarter and outscored visitors 24:7.
The captain was his usual self. Fighting for rebounds, delivering some classy assists to his teammates and scoring at pure will. A vintage Toko.
The final line said it all: 24 points (8/17 from the field), 7 rebounds, 2 dimes, 2 steals and Tornike was accurate from the free throw line too, as he converted 5/6 tries.
Shengelia, by many opinions the best player in the history of Georgian basketball, just makes everybody around him better. His teammates raise the bar and are performing at their peak with the captain alongside them. Toko just sets the tone and he is natural born leader.
Georgia is on a roll and some usual suspects (Sandro Mamukelashvili, Goga Bitadze) are playing with pride and passion.
But the captain sets the tone and that’s a good sign for this NT.
Georgia (4:3) is placed in Group I in the second stage and will face Portugal in away on August 31st.
