"VAN" (Sports Desk - 20.08.2026) :: The Georgian national basketball team produced one of the biggest surprises of EuroBasket 2025 by reaching the quarter-finals and finishing among Europe’s top eight teams for the first time in its history. Now, Georgia is fighting for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.
At the end of August 2026, Georgia will play its first two games in the second round of the 2027 World Cup European Qualifiers. On August 28, Georgia will face Montenegro in Tbilisi, while on August 31 the team will play away against Portugal. In November, Georgia will host Portugal and travel to face Greece. At the end of February and beginning of March 2027, Georgia will play Montenegro away and Greece at home.
In the first round of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, held from November 2025 to July 2026, Georgia defeated Denmark twice and Spain once, while suffering three defeats — twice against Ukraine and once against Spain. This was enough for Georgia to advance to the second round.
Since August 13, the Georgian national team, under head coach Aleksandar Džikić, has been preparing in Tbilisi for the upcoming matches at the end of August. As part of their preparation, Georgia will play two friendly games in Tbilisi — against Lebanon on August 19 and Israel on August 23.
Fifteen basketball players are currently taking part in the national team’s training camp, with 12 players to be selected for the August 28 and 31 games.
