"VAN" (Sports Desk - Aichi-Nagoya, Japan - 04.10.2026) :: India have reaffirmed their continental supremacy and punched their direct ticket to the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 after successfully defending their crown at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 men's hockey competition. In an electric, high-octane gold medal encounter, India held off a spirited challenge from Malaysia to claim back-to-back Asian Games gold medals and secure their 5th continental title.
Malaysia took home a gallant silver medal, while Pakistan clinched the bronze following a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Korea in the third place play-off. With the top six men's teams outside the continental champion earning entry to the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers, silver medallists Malaysia, bronze medallists Pakistan, fourth-placed Korea, fifth-placed Japan and sixth-placed China have all booked their tickets to the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers to keep their road to Los Angeles firmly open.
The pool phase laid the foundation for an exhilarating tournament as traditional powerhouses battled for semifinal positioning. In Pool A, India were in ruthless, irresistible form, breezing through their five preliminary fixtures with an unblemished record and racking up 48 goals. Ace drag-flicker and skipper Harmanpreet Singh led from the front, converting penalty corners with trademark pinpoint venom. Korea navigated a high-stakes group encounter against Japan to finish second in the pool and book their place in the knockout rounds. Over in Pool B, Malaysia mounted an exceptional campaign, edging past Pakistan 5-4 in a classic duel to top the group with five wins in five match, with Pakistan finishing second to set-up a semi-final clash against rivals India.
The semi-finals unleashed high-stakes, edge-of-the-seat drama. Malaysia held their nerve in a white-knuckle tactical contest against Korea, advancing to the final with a clinical 2-1 victory. Meanwhile, India edged past Pakistan in a 4-3 win, with forward Abhishek breaking a 3-3 tie in the final minute of the match! In the bronze medal encounter, Korea were the better team in the first half, having led 1-3 until the 29th minute. Pakistan made it 2-3 in the final minute of the opening half and added 3 more goals in the final quarter to finish the tie 5-3 and claim the bronze medal.
The men’s final was a masterclass in attacking potency, set-piece precision, and ruthless execution under immense pressure. Facing an ambitious Malaysian side eager to upset the odds, India drew first blood in the 11th minute when captain Harmanpreet Singh powered home a trademark penalty corner. Malaysia responded almost immediately through Shello Silverius, who slotted in a fine field goal to bring the contest level at 1-1 before the end of the opening quarter. However, India quickly seized control in the second quarter when Jugraj Singh struck from a penalty corner in the 23rd minute to restore the advantage. After the break, vice-captain Hardik Singh calmly converted a 42nd-minute penalty stroke to make it 3-1, before Shilanand Lakra (54’) finished off a flowing move and Harmanpreet sealed his brace with another blistering drag flick in the 57th minute. With a commanding 5-1 victory, India successfully defended their Asian Games crown and crucially secured direct passage to the Hockey competitions at the Olympic Games LA28.
With their Asian Games triumph, India become only the third men's team to confirm their place at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028, joining hosts the United States and Belgium, who booked their direct berth earlier this year by winning the FIH Hockey Pro League 2025–26 title.
