~ With just over two years to go, the organisation of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games is transitioning from planning to readiness – supported by strong collaboration across all levels of government and growing engagement from millions of fans. Updates presented during this week’s International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission visit outlined key progress across a range of areas shaping the next phase of preparations, including ticket sales, the Cultural Olympiad, the volunteer programme and wider community engagement.
"VAN" (Sports Desk - 06.06.2026) :: Reflecting on the updates from the LA28 Organising Committee, Coordination Commission Chair Nicole Hoevertsz said: “As we move closer to 2028, the work is becoming more specific and complex. It is about turning plans into solutions that are realistic, integrated and deliverable. Every time we meet with LA28, we are reminded of the quality, commitment and professionalism of the people working behind the scenes to bring these Games to life. The progress we have seen so far gives us every confidence that the next two years will put us on course for another memorable edition of the Games.”
“In 2028, billions of people around the world will watch Los Angeles showcase the very best of our city, our country and the Olympic and Paralympic Movement,” said Casey Wasserman, LA28 Chair and President. “With a strong foundation in place and momentum accelerating across every aspect of our planning, we are more confident than ever in our ability to deliver an extraordinary and unforgettable Games. As we enter the final two years of preparation, LA28 is focused, energised and ready to bring our vision to life. Thank you to the IOC and the Coordination Commission for their partnership and guidance, which have helped strengthen our plans and position us for success.”
Supporting Wasserman’s message, LA28 highlighted strong progress over the past several months in a range of areas, as the organisers get ready to deliver the Games.
Over four million tickets sold
The Organising Committee reported unprecedented demand during its initial ticket sale, with more than four million tickets sold. In line with LA28’s commitment to ensure affordable tickets for the host communities, 95 per cent of tickets purchased by locals in the Los Angeles and Oklahoma City presale were priced at USD 100 or less, including 500,000 tickets priced at USD 28.
Fans from 85 countries, all 50 US states and every US territory purchased tickets, underscoring the local and global appeal of the Games. Registration for the next ticket draw, for those not already signed up, is open until 22 July, with a second ticket release planned for August.
Cultural Olympiad launched
LA28 also shared progress on its Cultural Olympiad, launched in May this year, which will celebrate the creativity, diversity and cultural richness of Los Angeles.
Built around the six artistic pillars of fashion, film, food, music, performance and visual art, the programme aims to showcase the unique cultural identity of the city while providing opportunities for local artists, organisations and communities to connect with global audiences – thus also putting in place a legacy that will benefit the people of LA for years to come.
Increasing community involvement
The LA28 team also highlighted initiatives being rolled out under the LA28 Impact and Sustainability Plan, such as the recently announced Resilience Champions Fund, with a first cohort of local non-profits being supported to advance wildfire resilience and nature restoration, ocean protection and cooling solutions across Los Angeles.
Another initiative was the procurement plan launched in April, which aims to allocate 75 per cent of addressable procurement spending to businesses in the Greater Los Angeles region and 25 per cent to small businesses.
The Games’ signature PlayLA programme, which surpassed one million registrations last year, was also highlighted, with the latest figures showing girls’ rate of participation growing to 47 per cent and adaptive sports enrolments increasing by 13 per cent.
Future community outreach activities will include offering training to prepare individuals from Los Angeles and surrounding venue communities for Games-time roles and future pathways in sport, live events and related industries.
National and local engagement
Work with federal, state and municipal governments on operational aspects, such as transport and security, is intensifying, while outreach to cities has already started with a view to hosting an Olympic Torch Relay that will cross all 50 US states in 2028. And for the first time, community activities to celebrate Olympic Day will also take place this year in cities across the US.
The LA28 Olympic Games will take place between 14 and 30 July 2028, followed by the Paralympic Games, which will be held from 15 until 27 August.
