Eilish McColgan Named First Official Ambassador for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 03.08.2025) :: Scotland’s reigning 10,000m Commonwealth Champion, Eilish McColgan, has been unveiled as the first official Games Ambassador for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking a major milestone with one year to go until the world returns to Glasgow for the 23rd edition of the Games.

McColgan’s journey on the Commonwealth stage is nothing short of iconic. From her early start at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008, to a steeplechase debut in Glasgow 2014, and gritty finals appearances in both the 1,500m and 5,000m at the 2018 Gold Coast Games.

However, she solidified her place in sporting history at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she stormed to gold in the 10,000m, cheered on by a roaring crowd, and claimed silver in the 5,000m — marking Team Scotland’s 500th medal in Games history. She was honoured as Scotland’s flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony, a proud emblem of dedication and excellence.

Now, as a Games Ambassador, McColgan steps into a new role: not just as an athlete, but as a leading figure for the Glasgow 2026 Games. McColgan, a record-breaking distance runner, will play an influential role as a Glasgow 2026 Games Ambassador, engaging and inspiring communities, athletes and audiences across Glasgow and the wider Commonwealth.

"I am very excited that I am one of the first Ambassadors for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games." Eilish commented on her new role. "The Commonwealth Games is incredibly special to myself and my family. My grandparents were in the stadium in 1986 cheering my Mum onto gold over the 10,000m in Edinburgh and then being able to replicate that myself in Birmingham 2022 and have my mum and dad in the stands, cheering me on to gold, was an incredible moment for both myself and my family. I'm very excited that Scotland will be hosting another Commonwealth Games next year."

McColgan’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the countdown to 11 days of world-class action in Summer 2026, where Glasgow will once again take centre stage on the global sporting map.
