2025 European Rowing Championships end with British and German gold rush

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 02.06.2025) :: The last day of the 2025 European Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, saw a gold rush from Great Britain and Germany that took the British team to the top of the medal standings.

After winning five gold medals in Olympic events on Sunday, Great Britain finished the regatta with six gold, a silver and two bronze medals, ahead of Germany with five golds and a silver.

Although the wind had dropped compared to previous days, another two European Championship best times (EChBTs) fell, in the men’s and women’s quadruple sculls – with Great Britain winning both events. It was the first time the nation has won the men’s quadruple sculls at a European Rowing Championships, and their first medal in this event since 2019. Overall, 16 EChBTs have been established in Plovdiv in four days of racing, across all Olympic events except for the women’s double sculls, plus both lightweight single sculls events, the PR1 men’s and women’s single sculls, and the PR3 mixed double sculls. The PR1 men’s single sculls and the PR3 mixed double sculls times are also world best times, and a number of the EChBTs came close to world bests. On Sunday, Great Britain also won the men’s and women’s eights and the women’s single sculls finals. In the men’s eight, it was a fifth successive European gold medal, but the women’s wins came after several years without a European title – since 2016 in the eight, and since 2017 in the single. Germany took wins in the PR2 mixed double sculls, lightweight men’s pairs and lightweight men’s double sculls. Yauheni Zalaty (AIN) was the only athlete not from Britain or Germany to claim a title, as he added European gold to his Paris 2024 Olympic Games silver medal.

The Netherlands and Italy also enjoyed success on Sunday, with the former winning silver in the men’s quadruple sculls and both eights events, plus women’s quadruple sculls bronze, while Italy picked up bronze in both eights.

Meanwhile Mihai Chiruta of Romania and Frida Sangaard Nielsen of Denmark won their nations’ first-ever European medals in the men’s and women’s single sculls respectively.

The next regatta on the international calendar is the World Rowing Cup in Varese, Italy, between 13-15 June 2025.
