UN emphasizes midwife training in Afghanistan

"VAN" (International Desk - 10.05.2024) :: The United Nations Population Fund in Afghanistan has called for investment in empowering midwives in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for quality training and ensuring access to resources in the country.

This institution, on Wednesday, May 8, released a statement on its social media platform X calling for investments to empower midwives in Afghanistan.

The UN Population Fund has stressed that “we need to invest in creating an environment that enables mothers to perform their vital tasks.”

Additionally, the institution has stated that it is working to create pathways for quality training, ensure access to resources, and empower midwives to actively participate as equal partners in health systems.

Previously, the United Nations Population Fund stated that over the past eight years, the maternal mortality rate during childbirth has not decreased globally.

According to the report of this institution, over 50% of preventable maternal deaths occur in countries experiencing humanitarian crises and wars, with 800 women dying each day during childbirth worldwide.

Furthermore, the World Health Organization statistics show that Afghanistan has the highest maternal mortality rate in Asia, with 638 deaths per 100,000 live births.

This is amid ongoing concerns about the increase in maternal mortality and the shortage of nurses and midwives in Afghanistan, especially in the remote areas of the country.

According to estimates by the United Nations, every month 24,000 women in remote areas of Afghanistan give birth, and they need access to skilled nurses such as midwives, especially during the current humanitarian crisis.
