World Rowing Championships 2025 begins today

"VAN" (Sports Desk - 21.09.2025) :: The 2025 World Rowing Championships begin tomorrow, Sunday, 21 September 2025, in Shanghai, China. Competition will be held over eight days in 23 boat classes.

The medal races start on Thursday, 25 September at 14:05 UTC+8.

WHAT ARE THE WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS?

The first World Rowing Championships were staged in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1962. Initially held every four years, the championships soon became an annual event. It is the biggest annual World Rowing event. The 2019 World Rowing Championships were held in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria with 1200 athletes from 80 nations competing.

Women’s boat classes were included in the World Championship programme from 1974, with lightweight categories for both men and women featuring annually from 1985. In 2018 the championship programme became gender equal with the same number of boat classes for men and women. Para rowing was integrated into the World Rowing Championships programme in 2002. Originally raced over 1000m, in 2017 the length of racing changed to 2000m.

The Mixed Double Sculls and Mixed Eight are new additions to the World Rowing Championships programme, making their debut in 2025 in Shanghai.

ROWERS TO WATCH

A total of 56 nations and over 700 athletes are set to gather in Shanghai, China, for the pinnacle event of the year.

LIVE video streaming will be available on the World Rowing website for all Heats, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, B and A Finals. The video streaming will start 5 minutes before the first race.
