"VAN" (Tokyo 2020 Olympic - Sports Desk) :: Another first has come to Tokyo, as the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have announced that they will be opening the first Paralympic museum in history in time for the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The Paralympic museum has been over 10 years in the making will be a museum accessible for all to “chronicle the history of the Paralympic movement.”
“We want people to leave the museum with an understanding of just what the Paralympic movement is all about, where it started, how it has grown from a tiny sporting event involving 16 injured service men and women in Stoke Mendeley in Great Britain through to being the world's third biggest sporting event,” Craig Spence, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at the IPC said.
While sports fans will love its exhibitions of torches, medals, equipment and kits of Games past, the museum will also cater to those who know nothing about the Paralympics.
“A lot of people don't know about our history,” and the IPC are hoping to change this with a fully “immersive experience” at the museum.
“This museum will be fully accessible to everyone who attends -- there will belots of audio descriptions, lots of interactive exhibitions that you can feel with your hands, exhibitions will be at a certain height to accommodate those of different heights,” Mr Spence said.
The Paralympic museum will be located at COREDO Muromachi Terrace in the buzzing and beautiful commercial district of Nihonbashi.
While the museum is opening in Tokyo for the duration of the 16th edition of the Summer Paralympic Games from 25 August to 9 September, the museum will relocate after the Games to the headquarters of the IPC in Bonn, Germany.
It is yet to be decided if the museum will travel from Games to Games after it's stay in Tokyo.
