"VAN" (Delhi Bureau) :: A new study has found that a nuclear war between India and Pakistan could kill up to 125 million people in just a few days.
The Science Advances, a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary open-access scientific journal on Wednesday published the new study amid growing tensions between the two nuclear armed nations over Kashmir.
The study warns that the nuclear war between the two nations, if happened, could kick off a worldwide environmental meltdown besides killing up to 125 million people, surpassing the death count of the entire Second World War.
Alan Robock, the co-author of the new study has said “Such a war would threaten not only the locations where bombs might be targeted but the entire world.”
Meanwhile, study’s computer simulations have found that each nuclear weapon detonated in the event of a war, could wipe out as many as 700,000 people.
The computer simulations have also found the explosions could send so much soot and debris into the atmosphere that it would trigger a “nuclear winter,” leading to rapidly falling temperatures, crop failures, and ultimately mass starvation.
Brian Toon, the study’s lead author has said “This is a war that would have no precedent in human experience. Hopefully, Pakistan and India will take note of this paper.”
