Sri Lanka bombings carried out by 9 suicide bombers including leader of a splinter group

"VAN" (International Desk) :: Sri Lankan officials have confirmed that the Easter Sunday bombings were carried out by a group of nine suicide bombers including the leader of a splinter group of Thowheed Jamaath.

State minister for defense Ruwan Wijewardena told reporters earlier today that a woman was also involved in the attacks who carried out a suicide together with her husband.

Wijewardena further added that the suicide bombers were ‘well educated’ individuals and one of them had studied in United Kingdom and Australia.

He also added that 60 people have been arrested in connection with the attacks.

According to reports, the Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the attacks but the authorities in Sri Lanka have said the role of the group remains unclear.

In the meantime, police officials are saying that the death toll from Sunday’s bombings has risen to 359 people while more than 500 others have sustained injuries.
